UNIVERSITY PORTFOLIO’S
ATELIER METHOD
The Atelier method teaches techniques begun in the early 1400s and developed over the ensuing 600 years; it is the system that created the masters. Its adherents include many of the greatest painters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Velasquez, Rembrandt, van Dyck, Lord Leighton, Alma-Tadema, and Bouguereau.
The desire to begin painting, however, should not distract the student from preparing a strong foundation in draftsmanship. If drawing skills are lacking when the time comes to paint, the complexity of the new medium can become an insurmountable challenge
If you cannot draw, you will not be able to paint.
THE CURRICULUM
The programme begins with work from a specially prepared set of lithographs, which quickly teach the student the basic skills of accurate rendering (the lithos were made by Charles Bargue in the 19th Century, at the behest of Jean-Léon Gérôme). The prepared drawings quickly and effectively give a command of shape, proportion and tonal rendering and are done using graphite pencil.
To acquire the utmost in accuracy and execution, the venerable sight-size method is introduced. This technique has been used by painters since the Renaissance.
Students advance by way of a step by step process, working at their individual speeds as they accomplish and build on techniques and methods gained at each stage.
With these new-found skills, the student progresses to cast work. Firstly in charcoal and then in oil paint.
Cast drawing/painting allows the student to analyze shape and proportion and to render the effects of light and shadows correctly. This process includes outline drawing, modeling, and the study of values. As the cast is both stationary and white, it enables the study of light on form without the complication of colour.
The curriculum goes on to still-life, the best arena in which to study colour, texture and the illusion of three dimensions and finally to portraiture.
If you are interested, I would suggest you coming over to the studio during class times.
Then I can explain the programme to you and you can see what the students are achieving.
